I had the most fun the other night! Unfortunately, I didn´t bring my camera with me because I am still a little nervous toting around valuables at night. Big mistake...HUGE mistake!
I had made a local ecuadorian friend at Papay-a-net (my favorite internet cafe...you know, the one with the amazing mojitos) who invited me to go along to a reggae concert in Guapulo. Guapulo is this bohemian neighborhood that descends down the side of a montañita (little mountain) in Quito. If there is such a thing as an ecaudorian hippy, then they all live in Guapulo. The concert was in a "club" that was really more like a big two-story house built into the side of the mountain. So, there were a number of different lounge rooms and different patios that you could go out on and look over all of Quito lit up at night! It was amazing.
The concert was amazing too! The band played some original reggae and then a bunch of Bob Marley covers, but they would mix in some Spanish verses. Fabuloso. Had a great time watching them and sipping "canelazo" which is a popular ecaudorian drink in the evenings containing steaming hot juice with or without alcohol.
At the concert I made some more friends from Switzerland and Germany. They have all been here for a month already, speak very good spanish and were more than happy to answer all my questions about Ecaudor...in English! They invited me to go to another bar with them after the concert. I was hesitant because I was already exhausted (I get tired pretty early from the altitude in Quito- 2580 m above sea level!) But I am so glad I did because it turned out to be a "salsateca." Now we all know that I consider myself a pretty good dancer, but I literally sat on the side with my jaw dropped for two hours. I have never seen anything more amazing! The feet moving so fast, the lifts, the spins, the dips. Ay Dios Mio! A few people asked me to dance but I didn´t DARE go onto that dance floor and ruin everything that was happening! I was in awe. Needless to say, one of the dancers there is a salsa instructor in Quito and I immediately approached him to take a salsa class the following Mon!
